Watercolor of Lights
Tom Carruthers and Jennifer Newsom of Dream The Combine, in collaboration with Clayton Binkley of Arup, create a visceral experience for New York City’s Museum of Modern Arts annual Young Architects Program.
As the name suggests, the 2018-winning design deemed Hide & Seek, shelters and shades attendees of the weekly concert series hosted in the summer pavilion of MoMA PSI.
A framework of trusses are set in and above the trio of connected courtyards, dividing the outdoor space into smaller, human-scaled sections. The architectural design promotes shifts in perspective of the space around them, depending on visitors' angle and location.
This visually responsive, kinetic installation used a series of pavilions, stages, and movable mirrored walls to create a multiplicity of viewpoints. The mirrors move in response to wind or human touch, reflecting changing views.
The lighting design team spatially divided the installation into two mirror worlds: one rendering a spectrum of colors and the other with warm white led light, supplied by the RGBW24/6.0 LED strip.
Challenged with the requirement for a water element to cool visitors, the team created a giant "cloud luminaire" by running a sizeable hanging band across the courtyard, filling it with mist, and illuminating the mist at night with the WIDE extrusion and RGBW strip. This created a watercolor effect across the sky.
